Procedural safeguards are the written notice of your rights under IDEA and state special education law. They cover consent, evaluations, IEPs, records access, and how to resolve disagreements.
Keep a current copy. Older packets may not reflect the latest state contact information.
When you should receive them
Schools must provide procedural safeguards at least once a school year and at key moments—such as when you request an evaluation, when a due process complaint is filed, or when you request a copy.
If you have not received them, email the special education coordinator and ask for the current ${state.label} notice in your preferred language when available.
